What is an Electrical Panel?
An electrical panel is a group of metal-enclosed equipment in which a facility’s electrical distribution, control, and protection systems are organized. Choosing the right panel is critical for the safe and efficient operation of the facility.
Types of Electrical Panels
1. LV Distribution Panel (ADP)
The main distribution panel distributes the electricity coming from the transformer center to sub-distribution panels and consumption points within the facility.
Components:
- Main incoming breaker (ACB/MCCB)
- Molded case circuit breakers
- Busbars (copper/aluminum)
- Energy analyzer
- Protection relays
Areas of Use: All types of commercial and industrial facilities
2. Power Factor Correction Panel
By compensating reactive power, it reduces energy costs and decreases the current drawn from the grid.
Components:
- Reactive power control relay
- Power factor correction capacitors
- Contactors
- Fuse groups
Benefits:
- 10–30% savings on the electricity bill
- Reduces cable and transformer losses
- Avoiding TEDAŞ penalties
3. MCC - Motor Control Center
Provides control and protection for industrial motors.
Components:
- Motor protection circuit breakers
- Contactors
- Soft starters
- Frequency inverters (VFD)
Areas of Use: Factories, pumping stations, conveyor systems
4. Transfer Panel (ATS)
In the event of a grid outage, it automatically switches to the generator.
Types:
- Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
- Manual Transfer
- Transfer with bypass
5. Automation Panel
Houses PLC/SCADA-based automation systems.
Components:
- PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
- HMI (Operator Panel)
- I/O modules
- Communication modules
What to Consider When Selecting a Panel
- The facility’s total power requirement
- Protection selectivity (selectivity)
- IP protection rating (IP31–IP65)
- Compliance with standards (IEC 61439)
- Expansion capacity
